Brancopolis | sculptuur, ruimtelijke installatie

De titel 'Brancopolis 'is een samenvoeging van Brâncuși en Metropolis, die niet alleen mijn inspiratiebronnen verraadt, maar ook stimuleert dat je het werk op twee manieren kunt beschouwen. Het werk geldt allereerst als een uiting van beeldhouwkunst; een sculptuur / ruimtelijke installatie. Het is bedoeld als een ode aan Constantin Brâncuși, de Roemeense beeldhouwer die gedurende zijn hele leven op zoek is geweest naar de ideale verbeelding van de relatie tussen het aardse en het hogere. Die zoektocht leidde tot zijn ultieme sculptuur: The Endless Column, een stapeling van identieke, messing elementen met een hoogte van 30 meter (10 verdiepingen). Zijn werk raakt in mijn ogen aan de essentie van beeldhouwkunst: het stapelen als basishandeling voor het creëren van ruimtelijkheid.

De science fiction film Metropolis van Fritz Lang uit 1927 toont ons een futuristische samenleving waarbij de aanvankelijk utopische stad gaandeweg overgaat in een dystopische nachtmerrie. In mijn installatie Brancopolis refereer ik hieraan: het werk laat zich ook lezen als een utopisch stedenbouwkundig schaalmodel voor een woonwijk met uitsluitend hoogbouwtorens. Ook in Rotterdam heerst een dergelijke hoogbouwkoorts, daar staat de stad zelfs bekend om...

The title ‘Brancopolis’ is a combination of Brâncuși and Metropolis. which not only reveals my sources of inspiration, but also encourages one to consider the work in two ways. First, the work counts as an expression of sculpture. It is intended as an ode to Constantin Brâncuși, the Romanian sculptor who spent his entire life searching for the ideal representation of the relationship between the earthly and the higher. That search led to his ultimate sculpture: The Endless Column, a stack of identical, brass elements with a height of 30 metres (10 floors). In my view, his work touches on the essence of sculpture: stacking as the primal principle of spatiality.

Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction film Metropolis shows us a futuristic society in which the initially utopian city gradually turns into a dystopian nightmare. I refer to this in my installation Brancopolis: the work can also be read as an utopian urban planning scale model for a residential area with only high-rise towers. In Rotterdam there is for sure a similar high-rise fever; the city is even known for its skyline with skyscapers.
