Gravitas | sculptuur, ruimtelijke installatie

Bouwen is bovenal een gevecht tegen de zwaartekracht. Zodra, na het ordenen van elementen in het platte vlak, het verticale aspect zich aandient, komt de zwaartekracht om de hoek kijken. Alle moderne technieken (zoals GPS en laser) ten spijt vertrouwen timmerlieden en metselaars liever op een realiteitscheck met het schietlood. Een schietlood bestaat feitelijk slechts uit een gewicht met een koord eraan dat vrijelijk wordt opgehangen en waaraan een zuivere verticaliteit (loodrecht op de aarde) kan worden afgelezen. Een schietlood liegt nooit.          Met Gravitas breng ik een ode aan die zwaartekracht, de grote 'corrector aller bouwsels'.

In de installatie is een collectie schietloodjes vrij in de ruimte opgehangen, bestaande uit realistische exemplaren uit bouwmarkten, naast fictieve schietloodjes gemaakt van uiteenlopende materialen. De zwerm gewichten hangt met metselkoorden via timmermanspotloden aan een rooster, waardoor het gevoel van 'puppets on a string' ontstaat.

Toen ik mocht tentoonstellen bij PHK 18 (architectenbureau annex galerie) heb ik het autonome werk Gravitas brutaalweg als ruimtelijke installatie ingevoegd in het hart van het bureau. Temidden van alle rekenaars en tekenaars die dagelijks bezig zijn de zwaartekracht te beteugelen hangt Gravitas als een stilzwijgend geweten.

Building is above all a fight against gravity. When, after having arranged elements in the flat plane, the vertical aspect comes into view, the influence of gravitational force is inevitable. Despite all modern techniques (such as GPS and laser), carpenters and bricklayers prefer to rely on a reality check with the plumb bob. This instrument just simply consists of a weight on a cord that is freely suspended and from which a pure verticality (perpendicular to the earth's surface) can be read. A plumb bob never lies. With Gravitas, I pay tribute to gravity, the great 'corrector of all constructions'.

In the installation, a collection of sixty plumb bobs is suspended freely in the space, consisting of realistic specimens from DIY stores, alongside fictitious plumb bobs made from a variety of materials. The swarm of weights hangs from a grid with masonry cords via carpenter's pencils, creating the feeling of 'puppets on a string'. When I was allowed to exhibit at PHK 18 (architectural firm / gallery), I boldly inserted the autonomous work Gravitas into the heart of the firm as a spatial installation. Hanging in the midst of all the calculators and draftsmen, who are controlling gravity every day, Gravitas acts like a silent conscience.
