Met de reeks Kwadraatmeter onderzoek ik het weven als ordeningsprincipe. De weefsels zijn weliswaar opgebouwd uit dezelfde kleurbanen, maar verschillen enorm in eindbeeld doordat de gekozen bindwijze net even anders is. Het is verbazingwekkend om te zien hoe een klein verschil in gekozen weefpatroon zo’n grote diversiteit aan kleurbeelden kan opleveren.

“Meten is weten” is een motto dat zijn gelijk reeds lang bewezen heeft. Hoe anders wordt het wanneer –zoals bij Kwadraatmeter het geval is– honderd meetlinten door elkaar gevlochten worden tot een vlechtwerk van één vierkante meter. Dit flexibele weefsel blijkt namelijk geen betrouwbaar meetinstrument op te leveren, het is ongeschikt om oppervlaktes accuraat mee op te meten. Kwadraatmeter werpt zo een poëtisch licht op het begrip ‘een meter bij een meter’.

In de reeks weefexperimenten orden ik de meetlinten bovendien zodanig dat de kleuren zich loszingen van de bindwijze en zich gaan gedragen als zelfstandige lagen. De vlechtwerken worden daardoor steeds losser en ruimtelijker. Daar waar de noodzakelijke vlechtverbindingen ontbreken zet ik metalen zeilringen in als constructief hulpmiddel om de verschillende lagen bij elkaar te houden.

Het weefsel kruipt uit het platte vlak en groeit uit tot een driedimensionaal reliëf: weven als sculpturale handeling.

With the series of 'Square Meter' I have researched into the act of weaving as an organising, threedimensional principle. Allthough the woven fabrics are built up with similar colour bands in the same order, they differ a lot in the final visual result, thanks to the differences in the chosen binding method. Each 'Square Meter' is made out of the same repetitive - both horizontal as vertical - bundles coloured measuring tapes from IKEA: yellow-gray-yellow, green-red-green. Comparing the outcome in all four fabrics, it is amazing to see how a small change in chosen weaving pattern can cause such a huge variety in colour schemes.

'To measure is to know' is a famous expression. But with regard to my square meters, in which a hundred precise meters are intertwined into one tissue, the result is far from a reliable measuring instrument: you just can't measure a space properly with it. My 'Square Meters' act more like a fluid, poetic comment on the rigid concept of 'one by one meter'.

I arrange the measuring tapes in a spatial way. Focusing on the series, developing from 0.0 to 4.0, the colour bands break free from the weaving scheme and start acting like independent spatial layers. As a substitute for the woven conjunctions that for this reason disappeared, I used metal eyelets to keep the layers together. The woven fabric, so to speak, crowls up from its flat square and grows towards a threedimensional relief; almost like a flying carpet.
