Modulor 2.0 is niet alleen als autonome sculptuur (schaal 1 : 1) ontworpen, maar geldt ook als utopisch architectuurmodel (schaal 1 : 200). Het beeld verwijst naar het maatsysteem ‘Modulor’ dat de architect Le Corbusier sinds 1947 hanteerde in zijn architectuurprojecten. De modulor geldt allereerst als een vertaling van de menselijke afmetingen in een absoluut maatsysteem: de mens als ‘maat der dingen’. Zijn maatsysteem gaat uit van een modelmens van 1,83 meter lang. Daarnaast schrijft de modulor onderverdelingen voor die gebaseerd zijn op de gulden snede, die weer terug te vinden zijn in maatverhoudingen binnen het menselijk lichaam.

Ik heb het iconische ‘modulor-mannetje met opgestoken hand’ omgevormd tot een abstract beeld. Als je naderbij komt begint de stapeling geometrische vormen voor je ogen te vibreren en verschijnen er verschuivende parabolische kegelvormen. Deze lijken opgesloten in de cilinders, maar bestaan slechts dankzij een optisch effect.

In overdrachtelijke zin kan het beeld ook gelezen worden als een schaalmodel voor een wolkenkrabber. Deze toren zou dan 452 meter hoog zijn en 128 verdiepingen bevatten. Daarmee zou het gebouw net iets hoger worden dan de Twin Towers zijn geweest.

Modulor 2.0 was designed not only as an autonomous sculpture (scale 1 : 1), but can also be seen as an utopian architectural model (scale 1 : 200). The sculpture refers to the measuring system ‘Modulor’ used by the architect Le Corbusier in his architectural projects since 1947. The modulor is first and foremost regarded as a translation of human dimensions into an absolute system of measurement: man as the ‘measure of things’. His measurement system assumes a model human being 1.83 metres tall. In addition, the modulor prescribes subdivisions based on the golden ratio, which in turn are reflected in dimensional relationships within the human body.

I transformed the iconic ‘modulor male with raised hand’ into an abstract sculpture. As you approach, the stack of geometric shapes begins to vibrate before your eyes and shifting parabolic cone shapes appear. These appearances are locked inside the cylindres, they exist only thanks to an optical effect.

Metaphorically, the image can also be read as a scale model for a skyscraper. This tower would then be 452 metres high and contain 128 floors. This would make the building just slightly taller than the Twin Towers have been.
