De titel ‘ZEN & de kunst van het klonen’ is een knipoog naar het wereldberoemde boek van Robert Pirsig: ‘Zen en de kunst van het motoronderhoud’, dat een cultstatus verwierf onder New Age aanhangers. Het mooie aan dit reisverhaal is dat het eigenlijk een filosofische verhandeling over occulte levensvragen is. Ook mijn sculptuur 'ZEN...' is filosfisch van aard. Het  gaat over de essentie van het bestaan: de celdeling die all vormen van leven mogelijk maakt.

Wat mij in een natuurhistorisch museum altijd fascineert is de grote rijkdom aan verzamelingen naturalia. Met name de wijze waarop ze teder naast elkaar gelegd zijn in vlakke eikenhouten uitstalkasten (lezenaars) kan me ontroeren. In mijn sculptuur 'ZEN...' maak ik gebruik van eenzelfde wijze van uitstallen: het volgordelijk tonen van de stadia in een celdeling.

Wat mij van de biologielessen op de middelbare school over de celdelingscyclus vooral is bijgebleven is de wonderlijke eenvoud van de tussenstadia. Alsof de magie van het vermenigvuldigen in zo’n korte animatie te vatten is. Fraai zijn ook de microscopische foto’s –feitelijk filmstills– waarin ook altijd zwarte slierten aanwezig zijn: de zogeheten chromosomen. Deze niet-aflatende stroom celdelingen heb ik vertaald in zes monumentale panelen. De momenten van verdubbeling zijn uitgevoerd als uitvergrote gipsen juwelen, gevat in logge betonnen medaillons en uitgestald op ijle stalen lezenaars.

The title ‘ZEN & the art of cloning’ is a nod to Robert Pirsig's world-famous book ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’, which achieved cult status among New Age followers. The beauty of this travelogue is that it's actually a philosophical treatise on occult life questions. My sculpture 'ZEN...' is more or less also philophical. It is about the essence of existence: the cell division that makes all forms of life possible.

What always fascinates me in a natural history museum is the vast wealth of collections of naturalia. In particular, the way they are tenderly laid side by side in flat oak display cases (lecterns) can move me. In my sculpture 'ZEN...' I use the same display method. My six displays show the sequential stages in a cell division.

What struck me most from the biology lessons in highschool on the cell division cycle is the wonderful simplicity of the intermediate stages. As if the magic of multiplication could be captured in such a short animation. Also beautiful are the microscopic pictures -actually film stills- in which black strings are also always present: the so called chromosomes. I translated this relentless stream of cell divisions into six monumental panels. The moments of cloning are executed as enlarged plaster jewels, encased in heavy concrete medallions that are displayed on thin steel lecterns.
